Nancy's story

I first learned that I had Hepatitis C when I participated in a wellness clinic sponsored by my employer. My liver enzymes were elelvated and I had further testing done. This was in 1986.

I have the most common genotype and the hardest to treat for victims in United States which I believe is Type I. My liver enzymes are about double what they should be but have remained relatively constant for the last ten years. I contacted the virus from blood transfusions while suffering from a bleeding ulcer. Back then it was known as Non A or B. Other than elevated enzymes, I really don't have symptoms. I'm 66 years old and fairly active. If I overdo, I might have some aches and pains. I can't do things I could at 25, but who can.

When I initially found out, I was upset but not knowing that much about it at the time I just started my research. I was more upset when I found out I hac breast cancer in 1996.

I am divorced, since 1986, hence the ulcer, so I have no lovers. My family and friends are very supportive and share any new developments I might miss. I have a son-in-law who is a physician and he keeps me informed also. My doctor recommended a biopsy but since they would not put me "out", I refused. I have had several cat scans and sonograms. All normal as far as appearances.

I have researched extensively and have settled on a program of milk thistle, vitamins, eating healthy, exercise and absolutely NO ALCOHOL. Most of my research is from the internet but I have read books also. I have no idea what stage I'm in but do go regularly to the doctor for blood work, etc. My gastroenterologist said whan I asked him that if I were his mother–would he recommend interferon treatment and he replied, "Probably not."

I do not belong to a support group other than this online service. My family is my support.

I worked as an educator for over thirty-four years and retired with full benefits and social security (not disability). I have my work insurance and I am on medicare. I feel very fortunate. I am not secretive about my hepatitis any more than having had cancer. I do not dwell on it but if an occasion arises and I feel it is pertinent, I discuss it.

The worst part for me is–I would like to have a glass of good wine once and awhile.
